KIRKLAND, WASHINGTON -- BYU quarterback Kevin Feterick will join
teammates Rob Morris and Matt Johnson in the NFL, but not through the
draft. The Seattle Seahawks signed Feterick as an undrafted free
agent, giving him a chance to make the team through the team's
training camp.
He is fortunate to sign with Seattle, a team that has a reputation
for getting free agents on to its team. No less than seven well-known
team members have made the team after joining as undrafted free
agents, better than most NFL teams. Seattle coach and general manager
Mike Holmgren says that while most NFL teams sign undrafted free
agents "to fill out the numbers we need to take to training camp,"
but he won't ignore them just because they weren't drafted. "Now it
is up to each young man," he said. "But that is not easy."
Feterick is probably the most intriguing of the seven free-agent
signings Seattle announced Monday. He throws left-handed and averaged
just one interception for every 30 pass attempts last season.
Feterick threw for 3,554 yards and 25 touchdowns during the season at
BYU.
