(Education's Deep Loss)
Salt Lake Tribune 25May00 P2
SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH -- At the age of 60, Utah education specialist,
Doug Bates, died on May 22nd after a three-year bout with pancreatic
cancer. His was a life of dedication to the schools, students,
teachers and school faculties of Utah.
Bates oversaw school law and legislative matters for the Utah State Office of
Education. As such he utilized his talent for presenting the nuances of
school law, of which he had an extraordinarily deep grasp, in a way that all
could understand.
A faithful member of the Mormon Church, Bates never backed down from
extolling the positive effects the church has had on public education in Utah.
Bates saw the positive side the cancer he suffered with. He made use of the
time he had to prepare himself and his loved ones for his death. He made a
difference throughout his life and will be missed.
