Mormon Cowboy Decked Out
(The buckaroo stops here)
New York Times Magazine pg70 18Jun00 P2
By S S Fair
SANTA CLARITA, CALIFORNIA -- The New York Times Magazine's fashion
reporter Fair went to the annual Cowboy Poetry and Music Festival at
Melody Ranch, the motion picture studio once owned by Gene Autry,
only to find Mormon cowboy Brenn Hill there, among a number of
photogenic cowboys. In keeping with the Times Magazine's practice,
Hill was dressed in expensive western wear and modeled for the
article.
Hill attended the festival to perform, and the Times Magazine says he
"sings traditional ballads in a traditional manner for folks just
like himself: well behaved, loyal, steadfast in the face of a
complex, terrible world. As Mark Twain said about Wagner: the music's
better than it sounds."
But Fair also admits in the article that Hill, a college student, is
"only Mormon cowboy I know." He also expresses surprise that there is
something like a cowboy poetry festival. "Is this oxymoronic? Or a
regional curiosity, like those Renaissance fairs we have upstate?" he
asks.
The photo of Hill shows him dressed in a $62 Polo Jeans Ralph Lauren
shirt, a $78 Denim vest from Guess and wrangler jeans.
