LDS Bishop Charged with Failing to Report Abuse |
Another LDS Bishop has been charged with failing to
report an incident of child sexual abuse. On Friday, Salt Lake City
prosecutors charged LDS Bishop Bruce R. Christensen, 60, of the Salt Lake
City 21st Ward with a class B misdemeanor after learning that Christensen
had been told of a case of child abuse by the victim's mother and failed to
report it. The mother told Christensen in a July 1999 interview that her
estranged husband had sexually abused their 13-month-old daughter. |
Upstart Smith Suddenly the Darling of National GOP Leaders |
In what is expected to be the first in a
tag-team effort by Republican congressional leaders to back a
political newcomer, U.S. House Majority Leader Dick Armey declared
the Republican Party's undying support for Derek Smith in Utah's 2nd
Congressional District election. |
Mormon temple dedication nears |
The Oklahoma City Temple Open House began this
past weekend, providing Oklahomans with 13 days of public tours ending July
22nd. But, according to the Oklahoma City Oklahoman, Church members find the
lasting significance of the building in its dedication and use. "The temple
is the tool that gives us all the blessings our Heavenly Father wants us to
have," says Mary Newman, LDS public affairs director for the Oklahoma City
area. |
Mormon takes his place among police chaplains |
On January 16th, LDS Church member Carlos Cortez
became the first Mormon chaplain of the Chicago Police Department.
Cortez is an active officer on the force, just like three of the
other four chaplains. And like the others, he will hear the concerns
of those of any religion, "I don't turn anyone away. I've had people
who are Muslims, Jewish, Catholic, nondenominational Christian," he
said. |
BYU's World Family Policy Center Cautious About New International Court |
Cautious optimism is what Richard Wilkins of
Brigham Young University Law School and head of the BYU-based World
Family Policy Center, hopes for as the new International Criminal
Court (ICC) will not be able to advance or enforce abortion rights.
Last week, government negotiators, who have been meeting since the
summer of 1998, finished the most contentious parts of the statutes
that will bring into existence the world's first permanent
Nuremberg-style criminal court. |
Name Change to BYU-Idaho Not Immediate |
Perhaps the most frequently asked question since
the announcement by LDS Church President Gordon B. Hinckley June 21
has been: "When do we begin using the name Brigham Young
University-Idaho?" For the time being, we will continue as Ricks
College. We will not begin using the name Brigham Young
University-Idaho in the immediate future. |
