Golden Bears Rookie of the Year Goes on a Mission
LDS Canada News 8Jul00 S2
VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLOMBIA, CANADA -- After a strong football career
in high school, being captain for Team Alberta at last summer's
Canada Cup in Vancouver, gaining a starting spot after joining the
Alberta Golden Bears, and being named rookie of the year, Dave Lowry,
Jr. has accomplished a lot for a 19-year old.
But these accomplishments pale in comparison to the team he plays for
now. The six-foot-three, 215-pound linebacker from Lethbridge is in the
Provo Missionary Training Center gearing up for two years in Johannesburg,
South Africa.
Lowry, who opted for church meetings and spiritual study on Sundays
instead of football practises, is supported in this decision by coaches and
team general manager, Ron Gabinet. "You just respect an individual's
beliefs and his commitment to those beliefs. We're absolutely behind him. He's
a talented, talented athlete."
