Mormon Stock Index Off Again as Broader Market Falls

NEW YORK, NEW YORK -- As the overall stock market indexes fell slightly again last week, the Mormon Stock Index also fell, dropping 1.4% to 128.01. But the small drop masked even more volatility than last week, as Franklin Covey, 1-800 Contacts and Hollywood Entertainment all rose more than 10% and I-Link, Micrel Semiconductor and Ten Fold all lost more than 10%.

The most surprising of the down stocks was Micrel Semiconductor which dropped more than 20%, giving back the gains of the previous week, as investors re-evaluated the company's recent earnings reports.Troubled Ten Fold continued its slide, dropping an additional 13.6%, after 35% last week, as investors struggled with the uncertainty around its postponing of its second quarter earnings report and announced a loss in place of an expected gain. One analyst downgraded Ten Fold to sell. I-Link also dropped, by 11.6%.

Franklin Covey, meanwhile, lead the index, jumping 16.7% on light volume. 1-800 Contacts also rose strongly, by 13.8%, continuing the interest from investors following its report of record second quarter sales and earnings. The company reports that 40% of its sales now come from its Internet site. Hollywood Entertainment also increased strongly, rising 11.7% as its stock continued to recover after the company stopped further investment in Reel.com, the Internet movie site it purchased less than two years ago.
