St Catherines Woman Found Murdered
ST CATHERINES, ONTARIO -- Renee Joynson, 23, was found dead by a
friend just before 9 p.m., 21 July 2000 in the garage of the Harbour
Heights Drive home she shared with her dad. Her friend had arrived at
her house Friday when she found out Joynson had not shown up for work
Thursday or Friday. She had been shot to death by Lee Hemphill, 29,
of Cypress Drive.
More than 200 people attended the funeral service at the Glenridge Avenue
meetinghouse for the employee of Zehrs. Family and friends remembered her
as being upbeat, caring, hopeful, happy, unique, a peacemaker, and a good
friend.
Joynson had moved in with her father after he became ill so she could take
care of him. Even after he passed away a few weeks ago, she still managed
to keep her home in immaculate condition.
The now-empty home displays a growing pile of flowers laid in the yard by
concerned friends, family and neighbours.
The funeral service was conducted by Brother Brian Hall, a counsellor in
the Bishopric of the St. David's Ward. The graveside ceremony was later
held at Pleasantview Memorial Gardens in Fonthill.
Niagara Regional Police are still on the lookout for her murderer. A
Canada-wide search warrant as been issued for Lee Hemphill, a casual
acquaintance of Joynson, wanted on the charge for first degree murder.
The 6-foot-6 white male was last spotted in Stony Creek shortly before 11
p.m. 22 July 2000. A video of Hemphill making a bank transaction several
days before the murder had been released to the public in hopes that
someone may recognise him.
Because police have yet to recover his grey, four-door 1997 Chrysler
Intrepid with licence plate 976 ZEH, they have no reason to believe he has
abandoned it.
