Mormon Stock Index Down Again in Up Market
NEW YORK, NEW YORK -- A strong upturn by network software firm Novell offset
dowturns by other stocks to keep a drop in the Mormon Stock Index to a
modest 1.00 points or 0.7%. Caldera, EarthShell, Franklin Covey and Ten Fold
all moved down more than 10% last week for a variety of reasons while the
NASDAQ composite rose 2.86%
But the news wasn't all bad. Contacts distributor 1-800-CONTACTS' stock rose
nearly 17.5% for the week, following better than expected earnings. The
firm's Internet sales have tripled over last year's sales. Also up was chip
maker Micrel Semiconductor, which is still benefiting from a strong earnings
report. Because of the diversity of its products, one analyst gave the firm
a strong recommendation, in contrast to the rest of the semiconductor market
which that analyst said were about to go into a downturn.
Leading the down stocks, was Linux software firm Caldera, off 14.8%. Its
recent earnings report showed a net loss and only a 9% sales increase. While
the stock prices of other Linux firms, such as Red Hat, have bottomed out in
recent months, Caldera is still dropping, and analysts have kept their
recommendation for the stock at a cautious "hold."
EarthShell, maker of environmentally preferable food packaging, also dropped
12.8%, after it reported a net loss for the second quarter, while management
claimed that the loss was inline with expectations. This week the company
was awarded the first Green Seal certification for disposible foodservice
packaging.
Also down was Ten Fold, the maker of Internet e-commerce applications, who
is underfire after rescheduling its announcement of its 2nd quarter results.
The results have sparked at least four class action lawsuits by investors
against the company covering the first eight months of the year. The
lawsuits claim that the company's management made misleading statements,
leading its stock to reach a high of $70 a share and allowing the company to
sell 500,000 shares for $26.5 million. Subsequently the stock has dropped to
$7 a share.
