UVSC Mormon Studies Program Wins Startup Grant
OREM, UTAH -- Eugene England, writer-in-residence at Utah Valley
State College, has received a $25,000 grant to help establish an LDS
cultural studies program at UVSC. England, who received the grant
from the National Endowment for the Humanities, hopes to establish a
full-fledged religious-studies approach to LDS culture. Mormons need
to study their own culture in order to understand it better, England
said.
The program is intended to provide a neutral atmosphere for the study
of Mormon culture and other topics separate from religion, but has
not yet been outlined or approved by the UVSC President Kerry D.
Romesburg. Romesburg said the program needs to be carefully analyzed
to make sure that no one will be offended or attacked.
