BYU Football Scores Comeback Win
CHARLOTTESVILLE, VIRGINIA -- After ending the first half of its game against
the University of Virginia Cavaliers down 21-0, the BYU Cougar football team
roared back in the second half to tie the game 35-35 and then win on an Owen
Pochman field goal in overtime. Looking more like the team their fans know,
the Cougars made a case for the team, convincing the Salt Lake Tribune, at
least, that they had a quarterback, an offense that can score touchdowns,
and a defense. At least the first two were in doubt after last week's loss
to Florida State.
LDS returned missionary Brett Engemann threw for 447 yards in the game,
including 215 yards in the third quarter alone, as the Cougars scored seven
second half touchdowns to Virginia's two. In one crucial set of downs, BYU's
defense held the Cavs to just 1 yard rushing over three plays, keeping them
from the first down just one yard away and setting-up BYU's drive for their
final touchdown, tying the game. The defense then intercepted a Virginia
pass in overtime, setting up the game-winning field goal.
