Lithuanian Swimmer is First Mormon Scheduled to Compete in Olympics
NEW YORK, NEW YORK -- Lithuanian swimmer Arunas Savickas will be the
first Mormon athlete to compete in this year's Olympic Games, joining
his team in qualifying heats in the 4x100m relay at a few minutes
after noon, Sydney time (2am Eastern time in the US). Savickas, who
is competing in his second Olympics, is a student at BYU. Also
competing on the first day are Charlene Tagaloa, a member of the US
women's indoor volleyball team, and Courtney Johnson, who is a member
of the US women's water polo team.
Mormon News starts daily updates (including on Saturday and Sunday) of
Mormon Athletes competing in the Sydney Olympic Games on Saturday.
Meanwhile, among US professional baseball players, the only good news
was that Chicago White Sox center fielder McKay Christensen was
recalled from the minor leagues. Christensen, who played as a backup
outfielder for the first few weeks of the season, still hasn't found
his bat this year, and the White Sox haven't yet given him much of a
chance. Over 15 games at both the begining of the year and last week,
he has just 7 at bats and has yet to get a hit.
Other Mormon players had a difficult week. The best pitching
performance was by Cardinal's starter Garrett Stephenson, who managed
just a 4.50 era over eight innings in his eighth loss of the year.
Wally Joyner at least managed to get a hit, and a batting average of
.333, but he only got 9 at bats over 6 games playing backup to the
Braves regular first baseman Andres Gallaraga.
Even the Giant's All-Star Jeff Kent hit a lousy .174 for the week,
trudging through the Giant's heavy seven-game schedule during the
week. But Kent's manager still believes in him. The Giant's Dusty
Baker says he'd give Kent the National League's Most Valuable Player
award for the year, if it were up to him alone.
