US Womens Volleyball, Basketball & Softball Move On to Finals
SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA -- Mormon athletes on the US Volleyball, Basketball and
Softball teams moved on to the finals during the past two days. The Softball
team will play for the gold medal against Japan, which beat the team in
extra innings in the preliminaries. Charlene Tagaloa will play with the
Volleyball team in the quarterfinals, despite losing to powerhouse Brazil in
the final game of the preliminaries.
Meanwhile, the US Women's Basketball team won its fifth and final
preliminary games, giving it a perfect record ahead of the quarterfinals on
Wednesday. Men's Volleyball didn't do very well, eventually losing every
preliminary game, ending Mormon athlete Ryan Millar's participation in the
games.
In track and field, Mormon athlete Maggie Chan finished competing in the
Heptathlon, ending in 22nd place, despite a third-place finish in the
Javelin. Jason Pryah qualified for the semifinals in the 1500m race and
wrestler Rulon Gardner won his first bout.
Mormon News subscribers have also identified a couple of possible additional
Mormon athletes; Ji Wallace of Australia, who won the silver medal yesterday
on the Trampoline and Marcus Jensen, a catcher for the US Baseball team who
also plays for the minor league Salt Lake Buzz. Any information that will
verify or discount this information is much appreciated.
