Laura Berg Wins Gold With US Softball Team

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA -- US Softball Team centerfielder Laura Berg has become the first LDS gold medalist of the Sydney Olympics as the US beat Japan 2-1 in extra innings. To get the gold, the US team had to beat all three teams that it had lost to in the preliminaries.

Meanwhile, US wrestler Rulon Gardner won his third straight match in 130 kg (286 lbs) Greco-Roman wrestling. Gardner will compete in the rest of his matches today. The US Volleyball team also won its quarterfinal match against Korea, moving along to face Russia in the Semifinals on Thursday. A win then would guarantee the US a medal.

The competition starting later today is probably the busiest, with at least 6 Mormon athletes competing. In addition to Gardner, Amy Palmer will compete in the hammer throw, Amy Chan in the 10,000m race, Robison Pratt Hinton in the Pole Vault and Jason Pyrah in the 1500m race. Natalie Williams will also compete with the US women's basketball team against Slovakia in the quarterfinals.

Please also note that we have been informed of another possible Mormon athlete, Caryn Paewai of New Zealand's field hockey team. We would appreciate any confirmation of Paewai or either Jensen or Wallace.
