Wisconsin Hopeful About Sharp-Shooting RM
MADISON, WISCONSIN -- Ricky Bowers returned from an LDS mission in
Poland in May, and now has a spot on the University of Wisconsin's basketball
team. Highly regarded as a freshman at Ricks College, Bowers ability to
contribute is one of the few questions for the team. But Bowers says his shot is
there, and he expects to be in shape for the season.
"The shooting is always there, and the mental game is still
there. As far as the physical conditioning, that was completely gone," said
Bowers. "I came back, and the first day I got back into the gym, I took four or five
hard shots, and I was already winded. My legs were dead." Bowers
figures from talking to other returned missionaries that it will take six months
from his return to get the conditioning back, which would put him in shape
about the time the season starts, November 21st.
In addition to Wisconsin, Bowers was recruited by Vanderbilt,
Southern California and Utah, but went with Wisconsin because of a scholarship
instead of Utah's request that he play at a junior college for a
year. Wisconsin also agreed to let him skip Sunday practice and games.
