BYU Jerusalem Students Will Return Early Because of Unrest
JERUSALEM, ISRAEL -- The students currently attending the BYU
Jerusalem Center for Near Eastern Studies will return early because
of the recent unrest in the middle east. The Center has changed the
schedule for the class and students will return November 24th, 16
days early.
Originally, the students were scheduled to return to the U.S. on
December 10th, two weeks after a field trip to Cairo, Egypt. Now, the
students will fly from Cairo on November 24th. In spite of the
shortened semester in Jerusalem, BYU spokesman Michael Smart says
that the students will still experience the full set of scheduled
field trips. The center has re-arranged the schedule so that the few
activities after the Cairo trip will now be held before the Cairo
trip.
But the unrest has caused some problems, says Smart. "With the
current situation in Israel, some of the traditional activities the
students normally undertake were impossible." Additionally, the 176
students have had to spend much of their time inside the Center,
since fighting broke out in early October. Two students have already
returned due to the unrest.
But former Jerusalem Center director R.J. Snow says that it is normal
to have some time when the students are confined to the center
because of unrest. Snow says that in his experience, students were
confined to the Center several times each semester.
