Crowton Named BYU Head Football Coach |
Gary Crowton, Chicago Bears' offensive coordinator and
former head coach at Louisiana Tech, today was introduced by Brigham
Young University President Merrill J. Bateman as the 13th head
football coach at BYU. "As we begin a new era of football at BYU, I can think of no other
person who is as qualified and prepared to take over a program that
has been under the direction of a living legend in LaVell Edwards,
than Gary Crowton," said Bateman. "This is a wonderful day in the
history of our tremendous athletics program." |
Crowton Will Be Named BYU Coach Today |
The Deseret News predicted yesterday that Chicago
Bears offensive coordinator Gary Crowton will be named BYU's next
head coach at a news conference later today. BYU officials confirmed
the report "We're hopeful about it. Things look good," said
BYU's sports information director Jeff Reynolds. "At this point, it
might be just a matter of formality." |
Edwards Replacement May Be Named This Week |
Gary Crowton, widely considered the top
candidate to replace retired BYU head football coach LaVell Edwards, will fly
to Provo Wednesday to discuss the job with BYU officials, and BYU expects to
name a replacement this week. |
LDS Student Chosen 'Athlete of the Week' For Sportsmanship And Athletics |
Although Mike Heiner is one of the better high school
runners in Northern Virginia, it wasn't his athleticism that won him Athlete
of the Week. Instead, it was his concern for another athlete during the
November 9th race. When another runner fell just 100 yards from the finish,
Heiner stopped to help. |
Vikings Win Real Dairy Bowl |
Collegiate rivalry and a spirited drive for revenge
of a former loss were key ingredients leading to a Viking victory
over the Snow College Badgers in the 14th annual Real Dairy Bowl. The
two squads faced each other in the contest sponsored by the United
Dairymen of Idaho and held at Holt Arena on the campus of Idaho State
University in Pocatello. After a close battle in the first half,
Ricks College's game plan came together for a sweet 45-14 victory.

Lady Viking Named All American |
Ricks College sophomore Trisha Pettingill has been
named a Volleyball First Team All American by the NJCAA. She becomes
the ninth Lady Viking so honored since 1980.

Swimmers Finish Strong at Speedo Cup |
The 17th-ranked BYU men's swimming team
finished in second-place while the women finished seventh after the
three day Speedo Cup competition in Long Beach, Calif. |
BYU's Season Ends with Second Loss to Arizona |
The Cougars had beaten teams ranked 1-4 this
year but fifth-ranked Arizona was not about to be the fifth top-five
team to lose to BYU this season, downing the Cougars in three games
at the NCAA Central Region semifinals Friday in Lincoln, Neb., 15-6,
15-6, 15-9. |
