LDS Family Decimated in Las Vegas Car Accident Sunday Night
LAS VEGAS, NEVADA -- Police in Las Vegas are looking for a motorist who fled
the scene of an accident Sunday night after causing the deaths of two
members of an LDS family and another motorist and severely injuring the
father in the LDS family. Holly Barton, 33, and her 8-year-old son Benjamin
Barton were killed, while James Barton, 32, husband and father in the
family, was critically injured. The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports that
the three were on their way to the broadcast of the Winter Quarters Temple
dedication at a local stake center.
Eyewitness reports say that the driver of a black Lincoln or Ford driving
south on US Highway 95 lost control of his vehicle and forced the Barton's
pickup truck into oncoming traffic, where it collided with another pickup
truck. The black vehicle then fled the scene of the accident.
John Hulme, assistant scoutmaster to James Barton in the LDS Church's Valley
Vista Ward, where the family attends church, said that the Barton family is
very well liked. The family includes 3 other children who were not traveling
in the truck at the time.
Police used the eyewitness reports, which said that the black Lincoln or
Ford had dealer's temporary paper license plates, to narrow the car involved
to a few addresses. At one address, a neighbor told them that the owner had
returned Sunday night with a damaged car, and then called the following day
to say his lawyer would contact police to negotiate. Police are trying to
trace the phone call to locate the car's owner.
