MSI: AES, Dell Drive Mormon Stock Index Down
NEW YORK, NEW YORK -- Sharp declines at the two largest stocks on the
Mormon Stock Index, AES Corp. and Dell Computer, drove the index down
1.7% for the week, in spite of a number of small stocks that had
significant gains. The small stocks rising were led by
1-800-Contacts, which rose nearly 35% for the week, as investors
anticipated the company's quarterly report, released today. Also
rising more than 20% last week were EarthShell, Fonix and Hollywood
Entertainment.
The gainers for the week were also in the minority, as 17 of the 27
stocks in the index fell last week. The biggest drop was construction
firm Washington National Group which dropped over 10% last week.
Investors worried about the firm's dispute with engineering firm
Raytheon over cost overruns in a former Raytheon unit Washington
National recently purchased. Washington National claims that the cost
overrruns were not disclosed. The situation led Washington National
to file for Chapter 11 protection today.
