LDS Volunteers Help Rebuild Youth Camp
NORTH FORK, CALIFORNIA -- Thanks to Sheriff John Anderson and
volunteers, many from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day
Saints, the once-abandoned youth camp in the Madera County mountains
will be ready for occupancy in June.
Putney Ranch Camp was built in the 1960s on land willed to Madera
County by Judge Marcia Putney for use as a camp for developmentally
challenged youth. The camp was maintained with state funding which
was discontinued in the 1990s and the camp fell into disrepair. In
March, The Board of Supervisors made the Sheriff's Department
responsible for renovating and reopening the 87 acre eyesore. The
repairs have cost about $12,000 and Anderson says volunteers have
contributed about $100,000 worth of labor.
The camp will open early June to host two anti-narcotics DARE (Drug
Abuse Resistance Education) programs. The camp will also be
available for a variety of youth programs, including its former use
for the developmentally challenged, and as a training base for county
narcotics officers.
