LDS Missionary Killed in Accident Was Track Star
One of the LDS missionaries killed in a traffic accident in England Tuesday was a Southern California track star who was chosen Orange County runner of the year by the Los Angeles Times in three consecutive years. Elder Mark Gleason died when a car driven by his companion, Elder Mihai Teodorescu, had to swerve into oncoming traffic. Gleason was three months away from completing his mission and presumably resuming his collegiate track career.

Long-time Sunstone Publisher Elbert Peck Resigns
Citing exhaustion after 15 years of running the Sunstone Foundation and its magazine and symposiums, Elbert Peck turned in his resignation to Sunstone's board of directors Friday. Peck is credited with expanding Sunstone's mission to include regional symposiums in Washington DC and the US west coast, among other places, and for giving the magazine a vision of what it could become. The resignation, which was not unexpected, came after the 46-year-old Peck had indicated that he feels worn down for the past year.

White Plains Temple Presentation Attracts Opponents
A Town Board meeting yesterday attracted more than 80 neighbors of the LDS Church's proposed White Plains Temple as representatives of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints presented plans for the use of the building. Most of the neighbors present opposed the building, fearing that it will increase traffic and claiming it is "out of scale" with the character of the neighborhood. Church representatives tried to assure the Board that the building is only used for special occasions and for rituals and has already been reduced in size to address neighbor's concerns.

Church Vandalism in Utah Increasing, Says Salt Lake Tribune
The vandalism of an LDS chapel in Sandy, Utah, which caused an estimated $100,000 in damage, led Tribune reporter Bob Mims to look at the vandalism of churches in Utah. Mims found a perception that vandalism is increasing there. He also found that the vandalism isn't limited to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and a review of Mormon News' files show that the vandalism of LDS chapels also isn't limited to Utah.

Has Elder Iorg Given it All Away?
Elder Isaac Iorg, serving an LDS mission in East LA, got a birthday present last week. It was the answer to a childhood dream, a present that would allow him to be just like his dad, but no one told him about it for days. He finally discovered the present when his mission president told him several days later. And now, his family awaits his return home June 20th to see what he will do with the present.

Guthrie Puts Stanford In College World Series Final
Pitching brilliantly last night over seven-plus innings, returned missionary Jeremy Guthrie blew away top-seeded Cal State Fullerton to take his Stanford Cardinals baseball team into the final of the College World Series. Guthrie, who was still completing his mission in northern Spain just a year ago, gave up only one run and four hits before giving up the ball to closer Jeff Bruksch. Guthrie's LDS teammate, Andy Topham, who was 0 for 10 in the series, hit a single to drive in the game-winning run.

Utah's Cannon Takes on Census Bureau over Missionary Count
Utah Representative Chris Cannon yesterday opened a new front in Utah's war with the US Census Bureau over an additional seat in the US House of Representatives. Cannon introduced legislation in Congress that would freeze funding for a key Census Bureau project, effectively holding the project hostage until the Bureau makes progress on a plan for counting American citizens living overseas.

With Hatch Out of Majority, Hansen Gains Power in Utah Delegation
Rep. Jim Hansen's recent chairmanship of the House Resources Committee still has the 68-year-old Utah Republican thinking of the folks back home when he wants his anti-abortion vote recorded. He says he is still one of them after 20 years since coming to Washington. He may try to downplay Sen. Orrin Hatch's recent ouster as Judiciary chairman in the Senate, but everyone knows Hansen is challenging Hatch as the new powerhouse of Utah's congressional delegation.

Officials of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir are scrambling to find a new venue for the choir's planned concert Friday, June 15th in the wake of flooding this past weekend. Mark Willes: the Career, the Controversy, the Compassion, and the Candor
In his 59 years, Mark Hinckley Willes has shaped a high profile, successful career for himself. His has been the kind of career which many members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints would see as a model for balancing success with church and family responsibilities and which, next month takes a typical LDS turn for a successful executive: a three-year missionary assignment, when Mark Willes reports to serve as President of the Honolulu Hawaii mission.
