Another LDS Chapel Vandalized in Utah
SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH -- The current wave of vandalism against churches in
the Salt Lake Valley continued last week when the Rose Park North Stake
Center of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was vandalized.
The damage was discovered at 8 am Friday by a maintenance worker, who called
on local church members to help clean up the building for events scheduled
that day.
Friday's vandalism is the sixth reported incident of vandalism against the
Church in the Salt Lake Valley since the end of May, leading local law
enforcement officials to wonder what is causing the unusual violence. "I
can't figure out the attraction to vandalizing churches," said Salt Lake
City Police Sgt. Fred Louis. Police believe each incident had been done by
different groups, and that the crimes ocurred when the opportunity presented
itself, through an open door or window.
The vandals sprayed a fire extinguisher throughout the building, broke
windows and light fixtures, kicked the hinges off one door, put a hole in
another door with a baseball bat, which was also used to break 20 keys on an
organ and damage an adjacent piano.
After the damage was discovered by the maintenance worker Friday morning,
more than 100 volunteers descended on the building to help clean it up and
prepare for the day's events. The chapel was to host two funerals and a
wedding on Friday.
