A Study Companion to the Doctrine and Covenants
SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH -- What can latter-day revelation teach us about the
Creation, the Atonement and the Second Coming of Jesus Christ? How can
knowing the history of the early days of The Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-day Saints help us understand the future blessings promised to a
worldwide Church?
In their new books "A Commentary on the Doctrine and Covenants (Deseret
Book, vol. 1 $22.95; vol. 2 $22.95), noted LDS historians Stephen E.
Robinson and H. Dean Garrett answer historical and doctrinal questions about
the Doctrine and Covenants. Volume 2 of the four-part series will be
released later this month. Robinson is author of "Believing Christ," one of
the all-time bestsellers among LDS books and part of the Deseret Book
Masterworks Collection.
This first volume discussed the first 40 sections of the Doctrine and
Covenants, introducing each section in the historical setting in which it
was given. The authors have drawn from countless sources -- original
diaries, journals, maps, and atlases -- to bring to life the history and
doctrine of the Doctrine and Covenants in an easy-to-read format. Throughout
the detailed studies, in-depth analysis, and perceptive commentary contained
in this book, the authors' love for the Doctrine and Covenants shines forth.
Doctrinal points may be clearer if we know the historical context. In this
volume, readers will learn about individuals who received personal
revelations that blessed them, than warned them, and that helped them as
they served missions; subline doctrines illuminated for the latter-day
Church; moments of sweet instruction from the Lord to the Prophet Joseph
Smith; and insights from modern prophets and apostles.
"A Commentary on the Doctrine and Covenants" invites us to study more deeply
the history and doctrine of the D&C, and offers a reward for those efforts.
