First Presidency Passes Olympic Torch
SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH -- As expected, LDS Church President Gordon B.
Hinckley handled the Olympic Torch, passing it on to fellow members
of the First Presidency as part of the torch relay. But none of the
First Presidency actually carried the torch, leaving that to Elders
Robert D. Hales and Neal A. Maxwell of the Quorum of the Twelve. The
Salt Lake Organizing Committee reported that Elders Hales and Maxwell
work the official Olympic uniforms and were part of the official
relay. Elder hales brought the torch to the First Presidency, handing
it to Elder Faust, who gave it to Elder Monson, who passed it to
President Hinckley. The torch was then given to Elder Maxwell, who
took it on to the next relay point. All told, the Church leadership
carried the torch from State Street west to Main Street.
