Huntsman Asks Utah Legislature to Help Cancer Center
SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH -- Suggesting that the state increase its
cigarette tax by 30 cents per pack, LDS billionaire Jon Huntsman Sr.
asked the Utah State Legislature to give 5 cents of the tax to the
Huntsman Cancer Institute at the University of Utah. Huntsman has
himself donated $255 million to the institute, but the worldwide
recession, which has hit Huntsman and similar specialty chemical
businesses hard, have left him without funds to donate to the
Institute. The suggestion, which has been introduced as a bill by
Rep. Carl Saunders, R-Weber, would give the center about $4 million a
year.
