Georgia Newspaper Recognizes Arizona Mormon Political Heritage
BAINBRIDGE, GEORGIA -- As part of a series of articles on Arizona in
the Bainbridge Post-Searchlight, the newspaper looked at the most
prominent politicians in the state, including Mormons Stewart Udall
and Morris "Mo" Udall. The descendants of early stake president and
polygamist David King Udall, the Udall brothers were both elected to
the U.S. Congress, starting with Stewart's election in 1954, and
stretching untill Morris retired in 1991. Stewart was also Secretary
of the Interior under President's John Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson,
and was active in pursuing environmental issues after leaving the
government in 1969. "Mo" Udall played professional basketball, served
as a lawyer and founded the bank of Tucson before serving in
congress, and sought the Democratic Party's nomination for president
in 1976, losing to Jimmy Carter. He was awarded the Presidential
Medal of Freedom in 1996.
