Lawsuit aims to stop Utah bank merger
A lawsuit was to be filed yesterday by six individuals and businesses in
Utah to stop the proposed merger between First Security Corp. and Zions
Bancorp, Utah's two largest bank holding companies, both of which have
strong Mormon roots. Zions Bancorp is the successor to an LDS Church
owned bank established by Brigham Young in the 1800s and First Security
was founded by LDS Church member David Eccles in the later 1800s.
Bank-merger foe says intimidation attempted
An affidavit has been filed in a federal lawsuit opposing the merger
of Zions Bancorp and First Security Corporation. A petition has been
filed asking the Fed asking for an extension of time in which the public
can make comments for or against the merger.
Evolution Taught the Mormon Way
Since August, when the Kansas Board of Education
adopted new testing standards that play down the scientific importance of
evolution, including the theory that humans descended from apes and other
lower species, Utah has had a particular interest in how and what is taught
in the schools to children about evolutionary theory.
