Socreds splitting apart
Edmonton Alberta Canada 5Oct99 D2
By Paul Cowan: Edmonton Sun
Alberta Canada's Social Credit party, a politically conservative
group nicknamed the Socreds, is in a real uproar, and now has two
leaders, with both saying the other is bogus. The Socreds haven't
elected a candidate to the legislature for the last 20 years. This
split surely makes things worse.
The dispute began when leader Randy Thorsteinson quit in April,
claiming he was forced out by the evangelical faction for being a
Mormon.
Each side is claiming foul and accusing the other of holding meeting
and elections against party bylaws. However, an amicable resolution
is on the horizon.
