SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH -- Tapestry of Polygamy, a support group for women
and children trying to escape polygamous families, has recieved a
"modest" donation from the LDS Church. Elder Alexander Morrison met with
representatives of the group in September and made the donation. "The
women of Tapestry represent victims who have experienced a lot of tears
and sorrow in polygamous situations," said Elder Morrison, a member of
the Church's First Quorum of Seventy.
"I was glad to visit with them [Tapestry representatives]," Elder
Morrison said this week. "I think their position is just." He also
indicated that LDS Church leaders are concerned about all victims of
abuse, including abuse from polygamous husbands. He declined to say how
much money was given to the group by one of the Church's charities, and
also declined to specify which charity gave the donation.
Tapestry of Polygamy head Vicky Punty also declined to give further
details. "We have had and do have a dialogue going with Elder Morrison,"
she said, "But our policy is that we don't disclose any of our meetings
with donors or the amounts or sources of donations."
