ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO -- Chilling winds and sleet greeted the 250
people that showed up for the cornerstone-laying ceremony for the
Albuquerque New Mexico Temple on Sunday. Most of the members that
came to the Temple's dedication that day were inside the Temple or in
one of several Albuquerque chapels where the cornerstone ceremony
could be seen on closed-circuit TV. President Hinckley braved the
weather to set the cornerstone.
"Let's get this mud into place," Hinckley said. "I'll show you how to
do it. I've had lots of experience." He then passed the trowel to
other members who participated, spreading concrete into place, "Come
right up here," Hinckley said to the crowd. "When these experts are
through, we'll give you a chance." He then went back into the Temple
while members waited in line for a chance to spread the concrete.
The dedication comes following a 10-day open house during which
73,000 people toured the Temple. The 33,000 square-foot Temple will
serve 50,000 members in New Mexico and 10,000 members in Eastern
Arizona and Southern Colorado.
