Hispanic LDS Judge Named To Court Of Appeals
A Los Angeles LDS Judge was approved yesterday by the U.S. Senate on a 59-39 vote for appointment to the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in California. U.S. District Judge Richard A. Paez, 52, said he was "pleased and honored" at the Senate's confirmation and thanked President Clinton for his support during the four years it took to overcome opposition, including that of LDS Church member, U.S. Senator Orrin Hatch.

LDS Senator Harry Reid Championed Paez Nomination
The long-stalled nomination of LDS judge Richard A. Paez to the Nineth Circuit Court of Appeals was finally resolved yesterday when the U.S. Senate confirmed the nomination 59 to 39. But the confirmation only happened when Paez' mother, Polly, called Senator Harry Reid of Nevada, an LDS Church member and the Senate's second-ranking Democrat and asked him to intervene with other LDS Church members in the Senate. "So that's what I did," said Senator Reid.

How LDS Member Gayle Ruzicka Changes Votes
Gayle Ruzicka, an LDS Church member, has the ability to change votes in the Utah legislature. Ruzicka is head of the Utah chapter of Phyllis Schlafly's Eagle Forum, and its influence at the Capitol is legendary. And the group says that the recent session of the Utah legislature was very successful.

LDS Couple Still Sweethearts After 72 Years
An LDS bishop asked a couple to wait to be married! In 1928, a bishop in the LDS church asked a couple to wait for two days while traveling 177 miles to Salt Lake Temple to be married. He did not want the couple, Cleao, (age 26) and Fern (age 16) McBride to travel together as an engaged couple, so they moved the date. They had planned on June 7, 1928. The result was two ceremonies....one to be married so they could travel together as husband and wife....and the other to be married in the Salt Lake Temple for all time and eternity.
