Elder Holland Speaks at Stanford's Annual Mormon Convocation
STANFORD, CALIFORNIA -- Elder Jeffrey R. Holland of the LDS Church's Quorum
of the Twelve spoke at Stanford University's annual Mormon convocation on
Friday, October 13th. The annual event attracts 400 or more Stanford
students, faculty, staff and alumni that are LDS Church members to hear
addresses on scholarship and faith.
In addition to Elder Holland, Stanford Provost John Etchemendy also spoke at
the ceremony. The annual event is unique to Stanford, which acknowledges by
it the Mormon presence at the University. According to Bishop Russell
Hancock, there are 10,000 LDS Church members in the Stanford area, "There
are a number of prominent Mormons in the student body," Hancock said.
Probably the best known recent graduate is NBA player Mark Madsen, who was
drafted earlier this year by the Los Angeles Lakers.
