LA Times Says Mormons in Gilbert, AZ In Denial Over Gang Violence |
In a major article detailing the trouble
Mormon-dominated Gilbert, Arizona has had with gang violence, the
newspaper claims that Mormons and city officials have failed to
acknowledge the gang trouble. It also says that Mormon culture has
led witnesses and victims to prefer handling the trouble through the
Church, rather than with the local police. The article ties the gang
to both racism and to a mafia-run drug ring. |
Thousands Hear President Faust At New York Regional Conference |
Thousands of LDS Church members packed 15 local stake
centers and chapels to hear President James E. Faust of the Church's First
Presidency speak via satellite from the Plainview New York Stake Center. The
New York Regional Conference included 9 stakes and districts covering New
York City, Long Island and lower New York state, as well as the New York New
York North and the New York New York South missions. In his remarks,
President Faust said several recent regional conferences had been broadcast
in this manner, with video feeds of speakers at one LDS facility being
broadcast to others. |
LDS Church Confirms Location of Columbia River Washington Temple |
LDS Church members were excited to learn in Sunday
church meeetings that the LDS Church will build its previously announced
Columbia River Washington Temple on a plot adjacent to an existing Church
building. The site had been the subject of rumors and a newspaper report,
but Church officials wouldn't confirm the location until this past weekend. |
Elder Holland Speaks at Stanford's Annual Mormon Convocation |
Elder Jeffrey R. Holland of the LDS Church's Quorum
of the Twelve spoke at Stanford University's annual Mormon convocation on
Friday, October 13th. The annual event attracts 400 or more Stanford
students, faculty, staff and alumni that are LDS Church members to hear
addresses on scholarship and faith. |
FARMS' Dead Sea Scrolls Exhibit Opens in Las Vegas |
The BYU Foundation for Ancient Research and Mormon
Studies' exhibit of replicas of the Dead Sea Scrolls has arrived in Las
Vegas, and will be available at the Las Vegas Stake Center through Saturday.
The exhibit includes replicas of the same scrolls on exhibit at Chicago's
Field Museum, along with illustrative historical paintings, and sculptures
and ancient artifacts from the time of Christ. |
LDS Sister Missionaries Profiled in Northern California |
Two LDS sister missionaries were interviewed for
Saturday's Eureka Times-Standard, telling the newspaper about their work and
their backgrounds. Interviewed were Sister Turaan Bayartsetseg from
Ulaanbaator, Mongolia and her companion Sister Liberty Stradinger from
Roosevelt, Utah. |
BYU Professor Susan Easton Black at New York 'Know Your Religion' Lecture |
Dr Susan Easton Black, professor of Church
History at BYU will speak at the semi-annual Church Educational
System Know Your Religion lecture for the New Your Region on Saturday
and Sunday. Dr. Black will speak on the events leading up to the
martyrdom of Joseph Smith on Saturday, October 28th at 7:30 pm in the
Scotch Plains, New Jersey Stake Center and on Sunday, October 29th at
6 pm in the New York, New York Stake Center. |
