Independence Gingerbread Houses Called 'Imaginative'
INDEPENDENCE, MISSOURI -- The LDS Church's Visitor's Center at
Independence, Missouri was called a "testament to the imagination and
holiday spirit" of the LDS Church members there in an article in the
Kansas City Star. The Visitor's Center exhibit includes 85
gingerbread constructions depicting landmark buildings from around
the world. The exhibit's theme is "Good Tidings of Great Joy ... to
All People."
The exhibit includes depictions of the Taj Mahal, an Aztec temple, an
Egyptian pyramid and even a tableau of New York buildings including
the Empire State Building and Central Park. The Visitor's Center is
open for the display from 9 am to 9 pm daily until January 1st,
except Christmas Day, when the display closes at 7 pm.
The exhibit was organized by church member Karen Woodward, an
accomplished cake decorator who teaches gingerbread classes for the
Mid-Continent Library system. She started making gingerbread houses
15 years ago as a family activity. Church members and the community
have volunteered to create buildings and support Woodward.
Woodward seems to have been successful in passing on the skills to
her family. Her three grown children are all skilled at decorating
cakes, and even her 6-year-old can handle a pastry bag. "It's just
one of those things you learn to use in my house," Woodward says. "It
gives us togetherness time."
