Michael Young: Having a 'Wonderfully Good Time'
WASHINGTON, DC -- Vice-chair of the United States International
Commission on Religious Freedom. Husband and Father. Former Stake
President. Returned missionary. Graduate of Brigham Young University
and Harvard Law School. Former Law Clerk to a Supreme Court Justice.
The man is Dean Michael Young, who, in addition to all of the above,
is the current Dean of the George Washington Law School.
In a compelling interview in the February 1st issue of Meridian
Magazine, Maurine Jensen Proctor provides readers the opportunity to
glimpse how some of the building blocks of success have been stacked
in the life of Michael Young. The involvement and the direction of
the Spirit are evident and acknowledged openly -- and frequently --
by the subject of the article.
In one account, Dean Young reflects on the time when his son received
his mission call and the family realized that the mission president
for the son is someone who was baptized 25 years earlier in Japan by
the father. In another, Dean Young documents the seemingly miraculous
events wherein he, a former Republican administration appointee, is
nominated during a Democratic administration to the International
Commission on Religious Freedom.
From experiences as a stake president to those as a law clerk for
Supreme Court Justice William H. Rehnquist, to life growing up in
Utah, Dean Young conveys the insight that God moves in all of our
lives. Dean Young refers to a time when he realized that, in his hard
work and long hours, he was "having a wonderfully good time" and this
article offers this attitude and enthusiasm as keys to his success.
The article reports on the severity of religious persecution
identified by the Commission throughout the world and the effort
required to hold countries accountable to honor the freedom of
religion. It refers to recent proposed legislation in France which
seeks to restrict some religious groups as well as individual
incidents of persecution of Catholic and Protestant followers in
specific countries.
