Olympics One Year Countdown Makes CBC Radio
SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH -- This week Salt Lake City marked the one year
countdown to the 2002. Winter Olympics with fireworks. It was also
the week two men accused of bribing Olympic officials to win the
games were in court. The bribery scandal has tainted the Games. But
it's not the only controversy dogging the city. The latest is over
religion.
Three-quarters of the people in Utah are Mormons, or members of the
Church of Jesus-Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Most of the Games
organizers are Church members.
As the CBC's Conway Fraser reports, many non-Mormons are wondering if
the 2002 Olympics will be about sporting events, or religious
propaganda.
