Orem Readers Earn Visit from LDS Sports Stars
PROVO, UTAH -- Students at Orem Hillcrest Elementary School narrowly
missed winning a visit from a Utah Jazz player during the
Scholastic/Utah Jazz statewide reading contest. Hillcrest finished
17th out of 100 schools. The Jazz players visited only the top 12
schools finishing in the reading competition.
Inspite of their disappointment, the Hillcrest students were rewarded
with an assembly by two arguably bigger stars, both LDS Church
members. BYU head football coach, Gary Crowton and former BYU, now
Philadelphia Eagles (NFL) pro-bowl selection Chad Lewis surprised the
students. "We brought some hometown heroes," said teacher Lisa Braun.
Not only are Crowton and Lewis stars, they both attended Hillcrest
as children. They shared memories of Hillcrest and told of their love
of reading.
Coach Crowton encouraged the children to keep reading event though
the contest is over. The students amassed 457,949 minutes of
out-of-class reading over the seven week program, an average of 20
minutes a day per student. Lewis read his favorite book,
"Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day" to the
class. Lewis told students that the most important rule in life is to
be kind to each other.
Gloria Baird and Andie Brizuela were the two top readers, each
reading 10,250 minutes. Jazz Rockwood, a sixth-grader won a football
signed by members of the BYU football team. Wes Henry won a signed
basketball from the BYU basketball team. Jaramiah Fazio won a signed
Harry Potter book. All participating readers were rewarded with a
pizza party.
