Mesa Pageant Called 'World's Largest Passion Play'
MESA, ARIZONA -- In its 63rd year, the Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-day Saints' annual Mesa Temple pageant is believed to be the
world's largest annual outdoor Easter Pageant. "Jesus the Christ," as
the dramatic production is known, opened last Thursday, running
through Saturday, and will also be performed from Tuesday through
Saturday.
The 75-minute production includes a cast of more than 400 people and
a variety of animals. Nearly 100 volunteers perform stage duties, and
many others assist with costumes, makeup, construction, lighting,
sound and security. The music for the pageant was written by Arizona
composer Wanda West Palmer, and was performed by the Mormon Symphony
Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra and the Utah State
University Chamber Singers.
