Sports: Additional Mormon Golfer, Baseball Players Identified

NEW YORK, NEW YORK -- Mormon News subscribers have identified one additional pro golfer and several additional pro baseball players that are Mormon, bringing the total number of known active Mormons on the PGA tour to seven and the number in Major League Baseball to seven, with two additional players that have appeared in the majors but are now in the minor leagues.

In baseball's first week, none of the Mormon players had particularly strong weeks. Among the two position players, both Wally Joyner and Jeff Kent hit home runs, but barely cleared .200 batting averages for the week, Kent in 20 at bats, Joyner in 9. Among pitchers, starting pitcher Shawn Estes struggled in a 4-inning outing, giving up 7 runs and 9 hits to the Los Angeles Dodgers, while Omar Olivares fared better for the Pirates, giving up 3 earned runs in 6 innings. Both pitchers were credited with losses. Relief pitchers Kyle Farnsworth and Mike Feters fared better, Farnsworth giving up 2 hits in 1 2/3rds innings while Fetters gave up just 1 hit in 2 innings.

Meanwhile, in basketball, Shawn Bradley, Mark Madsen and Scot Pollard all had strong weeks, with Madsen, particularly strong, scoring 12 points in the 36 minutes he played and hitting more than 60% of his attempts. Travis Knight was relegated to the bench again this past week.

In golf, US Amateur Champion and LDS Church member Jeff Quinney played in this past weekend's Masters Tournament, but was cut after two rounds. Two other Mormons entered the prestigious event. Paul Azinger, recently identified as Mormon by a subscriber, tied for 15th, while Mike Weir tied for 27th.
