BYU Jerusalem Center Cancels Classes Again
PROVO, UTAH -- BYU has decide that the risks in Israel remain too large and
has cancelled classes at its Jerusalem center for the Spring term. The
cancellation marks the second consecutive term that classes will not be held
in the center and follows a Fall semester cut short by the violence in the
Middle East.
"We are being careful right now. We don't want to get the student's hopes
up," said BYU spokeswoman Carri P. Jenkins. She notes that the University
has warned affected students that cancellations are possible, "They do work
with the students who were planning to go. We encouraged them to have a
backup plan."
About 175 students attend the program each semester, making up a large
portion of the 1,800 BYU students that study abroad each year. BYU's Study
Abroad program is the largest International study program in the U.S. The
University has not yet made a final decision about opening the center for
either the summer term or for fall semester.
