UVSC Honors Hinckleys with Doctorates
OREM, UTAH -- Utah Valley State College presented President Gordon B.
Hinckley and his wife, Marjorie P. Hinckley with honorary doctorates at its
commencement Friday. The honors came as the college, one of two major
institutions of higher education in Utah County, Utah, along with BYU,
awarded degrees to 2,638 students. UVSC is dominated by Mormon students and
faculty, although it is a state institution.
Graduates and their families gave the Hinckleys a standing ovation in the
college's McKay Events Center. The college gave Sister Hinckley a doctorate
of humane letters and presented a doctorate of religion and humanity to
President Hinckley.
Sister Hinckley expressed surprise at the honor, "Sometimes I have to pinch
myself to know my life is really real." President Hinckley urged the
graduates in his remarks to both "become great and famous leaders" and look
for life's simple virtues, "I hope for you the very best that life has to
offer, but I hope even more for a few simple things -- things that come of
the heart, things that come of the spirit, things that come of the divine
within each of us. . . . My dear friends, these things are so simple that
they scarcely seem worthy of mention. And yet they are the very fabric of
life. When all is said and done, when you have lived your life and grown as
old as I am, you recognize that it is the simple virtues that count, that
make the great difference in our lives."
