Sports: Pollard Explodes in Playoffs, One WUSA Player Confirmed
NEW YORK, NEW YORK -- The Sacramento Kings' center Scot Pollard exploded for
21 points over 2 games last week, even though he played just 17 minutes each
game. Pollard's performance helped the Kings best Phoenix in both games,
putting them up 2-1 in their five-game playoff series. Meanwhile, Mormon
News has verified that former BYU player Maren Hendershot of the WUSA's
Carolina Courage is an LDS Church member. Hendershot played all 90 minutes
of the Courage's second game against the Washington Freedom.
In baseball, San Francisco's Jeff Kent bounced back from a poor performance
offensively reported previously to a stellar week this past week. Kent went
8 for 22 (.364) with 3 RBIs. Fellow Mormon position player Wally Joyner
didn't bounce back as quickly, going 2 for 10 over five games. Mormon
pitchers, on the other hand, did well last week. San Francisco's Shawn Estes
shut out the Chicago Cubs in seven innings Saturday, giving up five hits.
Omar Olivares split two games, blanking Los Angeles over six innings, but
giving up four runs against San Diego. Relief pitchers Kyle Farnsworth and
Mike Fetters both pitched well, Farnsworth bringing his ERA down below 2.00,
a career best, while Fetters has managed a terrific 1.29 ERA.
For basketball players, Sunday ended with all Mormons still on playoff
teams, but with Shawn Bradley's Mavericks just one loss away from
elimination by the Utah Jazz. Travis Knight is faring the worst, however,
since he has yet to play in a playoff game, despite the Knicks troubles
getting all their starters to each game. Mark Madsen also played little,
just seven minutes over two games, and failed to score during that time.
In golf, the three Mormon players that entered the Greater Greensboro
Chrysler Classic were all cut, Keith Clearwater extending his streak of
being cut from every event he enters to seven. The best performance for the
week came from the senior tour's Bruce Summerhays, who tied for 19th.
The other former BYU players drafted by the WUSA are also Mormon, MN has
learned, but they didn't make their teams. Staci Reynolds was cut in the
Courage's tryouts, while Sarah Reading, drafted by the Atlanta Beat, tore
and ACL at the tryouts, leaving her out for the season. Former Utah player
Staci Burt is not Mormon, and MN is still trying to learn whether or not
Salt Lake City native Becky Hogan of the Boston Breakers is Mormon.
