LDS Quarterback Expects All-Canadian Season
CALGARY, ALBERTA, CANADA -- The University of Calgary's Lincoln
Blumell is headed into his final season, and hopes to lead the
Dinosaurs to a win in the playoffs this year, possibly even getting
the team even further. "My main goal is to help the team win a
playoff game and then win the Canada West title. I feel a real
emergency to get that done. From there, the goal is to get to the
Vanier Cup and win it. And, if it all falls into place, maybe an
All-Canadian selection." But just four years ago Blumell was
finishing a two-year LDS mission, during which he hardly touched a
football.
"After high school, I took two years off from 1995-to-1997 to take my
(Mormon) mission in London," Blumell explained to the Calgary Sun. "I
did a lot of charity work, particularly working the soup kitchens and
going door-to-door. During those two years I hardly threw a football
at all. I brought one with me but they're not too big on our brand of
football over there. I had hard time finding anybody who could catch
my throws."
Blumell's playoff goals are substantial, given the team's failure to
win a playoff game since he joined the team, in spite of the fact
that the team has played three playoff games, in 1997, 1999 and 2000,
during that time.
This year, however, the team should have the firepower to make it.
"We've got a lot of talent coming back on offence, which makes me
very confident about this year," Blumell said. And Dino's coach Tony
Fasano adds that Blumell has the ability to take the team there, "Any
team, at any level, has got to have a great quarterback in order to
be successful. Lincoln is the epitome of everything a great QB should
be. Along with his talent, he has a great attitude and he's a great
leader. We're very blessed to have him back."
