Meissen, Germany Rejects Placement of Maeser Statue
The birthplace of Karl G. Maeser, early German convert to Mormonism and first principal of what later became Brigham Young University, has rejected an attempt to place a statue of Maeser in th town. Maeser's great-grandson Earl Maeser, who spent eight months raising funds for the $40,000 statue, says the town rejected the statue because it thought the family's motive was "solely a missionary thing."

Author Examines LDS Attitudes Toward Environment
Environmental concerns have become an increasingly visible and vocal subject of disagreement in countries throughout the world over the last few decades. Advocates for the present environmental movement are gaining influence while opposing factions all along the spectrum begin to form coalitions and alliances to promote their own varied agendas and views of the world. As a natural outgrowth of the fervor driving the debate, extremists on both ends of the spectrum are more visible than ever. Against this emotionally-charged and politically-sensitive backdrop, author Dan Flores, a history professor at the University of Montana, has released his new work, "The Natural West."

Salt Lake Tribune Looks at Recent LDS Books
Utah authors are publishing a number of faith-based books this summer and all are guaranteed to teach and entertain. "On This Day in the Church: An Illustrated Almanac of the Latter-day Saints," by co-authors Richard Neitzel Holzapfel, Alexander L. Baugh, Robert C. Freeman and Andrew H. Hedges encourage readers to find out "What happened in church history on your birthday?" The authors have produced a book that shows off their research skills without being exhausting. The oversized illustrated hardcover book is from Eagle Gate and available at $32.95.

Donny Osmond's sold-out concert was like a blast from the past. His devoted fans greeted him with shrieks and screams as if the audience of mothers and grandmothers were teenagers again. Donny didn't let them down.

Book of Mormon Manuscripts, More Work and the Glory Paperbacks
Probably the most significant books introduced recently are the three volumes representing a decade of work by BYU Professor Royal Skousen. The books make the original written manuscript and printer's manuscript available to anyone that wishes to study them. In addition, Deseret Book has continued issuing the Work and the Glory series in paperback, adding volues 4 and 5 to the three issued earlier this year.

BYU professor completes transcripts of original and printer's manuscripts of the Book of Mormon
After more than a decade of research, Brigham Young University English professor Royal Skousen has completed typographical transcripts of the handwritten original and printer's manuscripts of the Book of Mormon. A three-book set of the manuscripts is now available to scholars for the first time.

Ballroom dancers triumph again at Blackpool championships
The Ballroom Dance Company at Brigham Young University placed first in both the Standard and Latin Divisions at the British Formation Championships in Blackpool, England, May 30 and June 1.
