Detmer Ditches Cleveland, Doing Detroit
LDS Church member and former BYU Quarterback Ty Detmer will be wearing a Detroit Lions uniform Sunday after the Cleveland Browns traded Detmer to the Lions this past weekend. Detmer spent most of last season, his 9th in the NFL, on the sidelines because of a ruptured achilles tendon.

Sports: Football Coverage Includes Coaches, College
Football season has arrived, and so has Mormon News' expanded coverage of football. We have combed through the rosters of the NFL teams, which start their season this weekend, and discovered many additional Mormon players. In addition, Mormon News has added coverage of the four Mormon coaches in the NFL and coverage of Division I NCAA football, and AAA minor league baseball. In all, Mormon News is currently covering more than 60 active professional athletes, as well as numerous coaches and college athletes. And we have identified many more who may be Mormon.

No. 13 BYU shuts out No. 19 USC in Home Opener, Loses to Tennessee 2-1 in Second Game
On opening night of the 2001 women's college soccer season, the 13th ranked BYU women's soccer team defeated 19th ranked USC 2-0 on South Field in front of over 1,500 fans, Friday.

BYU Finishes Second at Point Huskies Invitational
After defeating host Washington Friday, BYU split its two matches Saturday with Texas and Purdue to place second at the Point Huskies Invitational Tournament. The 11th-ranked Cougars lost to eventual tournament champion Texas, 3-2, in a morning match before coming back with a 3-1 win over Purdue.

Cougars' High-Scoring Offense to Battle California
BYU (2-0) will hit the road for the first time this season, traveling to Berkeley, Calif., on Saturday, Sept. 8, to take on Pac-10 foe Cal (0-1). Game time is set for 2:30 p.m. (PDT) at Cal's Memorial Stadium (75,0128). Due to Pac-10 network restrictions, Saturday's game will be broadcast (tape-delayed) in the Salt Lake City area, beginning at 11 p.m. (MDT). Fans can also watch the game at the Marriott Center (in Provo), or by subscribing to ESPN's Game Plan. Saturday's game will mark the first of three straight road games for the Cougars.
