New Edmonton Stake

EDMONTON, ALBERTA, CANADA -- A meeting of Edmonton Area and northern wards and branches held Sunday, September 9th at the Edmonton Bonnie Doon Stake Centre saw the creation of a fourth stake.

The meeting saw some 17 hundred members in attendance presided over by Elder Simmons. The area presidency and Elder Robert White of the seventy were also in attendance.

The new "Edmonton North Stake" includes 12 church units. They are Athabasca Branch, Lac La Biche Branch , Saint Paul Branch, Fort McMurray Branch, Slave Lake Branch, Barrhead Ward, Clairview Ward, Londonderry Ward, Castledowns Ward, Edmonton 9th Branch(spanish speaking), Saint Albert Sturgeon Ward and Saint Albert Mission Hill Ward. The stake centre is located at the existing St. Albert building. The new stake has a total membership of about three thousand members.

Brent Purnell, former Bishop of the Castledowns Ward is called as the Stake President. His first counselor is Robert Van Bruggen and second counselor is John Nelson. Stake Clerk is Gary Melnyk and Stake Executive Secretary is Glenn Freeman.

The other stakes in Edmonton are the Riverbend Stake, Millwoods Stake and Bonnie Doon Stake.
