LDS Candidates Now Quadrupled in Municipal Elections

LETHBRIDGE, ALBERTA, CANADA -- The number of LDS candidates reported running in the 2001 Alberta municipal elections has jumped to 20 from last week's five. This week's total also includes candidates for two mayoral seats, three health region boards and one school board.

Out of the six cities reported to having LDS candidates running, Magrath has the highest count with eight of the nine city council hopefuls being LDS. Wayne Harris, also a member of the Church has been made mayor by acclamation. The eight city council candidates in Magrath are Russ Barnett, Charles Bly, Dave Clarke, Devar Dahl, John Evans, Rod Gibb and Richard Russell.

Gerry Baril, also a member of the Magrath Alberta Stake is running in District 5 of the Chinook Health Region. The Hon. Jack Ady, former Cardston MLA and a former cabinet minister is joining Baril in District 5, while Tom Hovan of Lethbridge is running for the CHR in District 2.

Airdrie, Picture Butte and Red Deer are also accompanying Magrath this wekk as new to the LDS Canada list of Latter-day Saint candidates. David Moore and Vance Gough of the Calgary Alberta North Stake are running for Airdrie city council and school board respectively. Mayoral hopeful Ron Oliver of Picture Butte and Red Deer aldermanic candidate Vesna Higham are also both LDS.
