MSI Up 5% Again
NEW YORK, NEW YORK -- The Mormon Stock Index rose another 5% last week as it
continued to recover following the September 11th terrorist attacks, this
time from a broad list of companies up substantially. Dell, Candence Design,
Corvis, AES and Micrel Semiconductor all pushed the index up, almost to its
initial, January 1, 2000 level.
The biggest gainers last week were Corvis (up nearly 30%), Micrel
Semiconductor (up 18.5%) and Myriad Genetics (up 18%). Myriad's gain was
driven by its announcement last week that it has discovered a potential
cancer drug. AES was up more than 10% on the news that its bid for the
Chilean power company Eldenor has received regulatory clearance and Cadence
Design was up on news that it signed a semiconductor design contract with
Phillips.
Overall, 25 of the 33 stocks on the Mormon Stock Index were up last week,
while eight fell, led by Computerized Thermal Imaging, which dropped by 7.7%
The index's 5.6% rise was larger than the Dow Jones Industrials, NYSE
composite and the S&P, but slightly lower than the 6.1% rise in the NASDAQ.
