Sports: More Football Injuries and Benchings

NEW YORK, NEW YORK -- The last Mormon baseball player did appear in two post-season games last week, but with the elimination of the St. Louis Cardinals from the playoffs, our coverage of Mormons in baseball has ended for the season. Meanwhile, the few Mormons in professional football have been hit by more injuries and benchings, leaving the most interesting performances among Mormons in football in the coaching. Hockey coverage is also getting up to speed, and although Mormon News learned that one Mormon player has been released.

Dave Veres' performance during the playoffs was good, even if it just covered one inning spread over two games. Veres struck out one, walked one and gave up one hit, but no runs. For the season he ended up with a 3.70 ERA, 3 wins, 2 losses and 15 saves in 71 relief appearances.

In football, San Francisco's Derek Smith, who has the best record for a Mormon defensive back so far this season, was injured, keeping him out of this past week's game and leaving former BYU back Rob Morris as the best Mormon defensive back. In addition to Smith's injury, the Lions' Ty Detmer was benched, after another poor performance, as the Lions went back to their initial starter, Charlie Batch. Also benched last week were the Ravens' Edwin Mulitalo and the Raiders' Junior Ioane. But while the coaching by Mormon football coaches may be more interesting, the Mormon coaches aren't doing that well. Head Coaches Andy Reid and Dave Campos are 2-2 and 1-3 respectively, and the best performance is from the Green Bay Packers, whose assistant coach, Darrell Bevell, is LDS.

Meanwhile, hockey players Aaron Gavey and Steve Konowalchuk both have three assists in the first five games they played. Assistant Coach Brent Peterson's Nashville Predators goalies have given up 10 goals in 89 shots on goal, 11% of the shots on goal.

The golf tours are close to ending their seasons, and Mormon News has added the player's rank on the money lists to our listings. The PGA Tour's Jay Don Blake was the only Mormon golfer who played that made the cut in last week's Invensys Classic, while Senior PGA tour golfer Bruce Summerhays finished tied for 35th in the Transamerica.

Mormon News' Sports statistics is also moving to Tuesdays, instead of Mondays, to accomodate coverage of Monday night sporting events. The NFL includes Monday Night Football with the previous week.
