Politics: September 11th Dominates Legislation
NEW YORK, NEW YORK -- Legislation considered in the U.S. Congress
last week was dominated by the September 11th terrorist attacks, with
the U.S. House considering a measure to enhance domestic security,
and the Senate looking at Aviation Security, combating terrorism and
a resolution to designate September 11th as "National Day of
Remembrance."
The House also considered legislation to make it easier for US
Colleges and Universities getting federal grants to offer courses
over the Internet as well as the Labor, Health and Human Services and
Education appropriations bill. But the terrorist attacks also
affected the new legislation from Mormon legislators this week,
including a bill from Congressman Matheson to develop standards for
improving aviation safety and a bill from Congressman McKeon giving
the Secretary of Education authority to act on the President's
national emergency declaration.
In the Senate, the five Mormon Senators participated in
near-unanimous passage of three September 11th-related bills,
including the Aviation Security Act, the resolution designating
September 11th as "National Day of Remembrance," and a bill to combat
terrorism. Senator Bennett, the lone Senator to introduce new
legislation, also was affected by the events, introducing a measure
addressing the critical information infrastructure in the US.
