Football Winds Down with Mormon Coach Nearing Superbowl

NEW YORK, NEW YORK -- With the NFL professional football season winding down, just two players and one coach are left on the four teams in the playoffs. But if Andy Reid's Philadelphia Eagles manage to pull out a win on Sunday over the St. Louis Rams, he will become the first LDS coach to reach the championships in any professional sport.

The playoffs this past weekend eliminated two other Mormon players and an assistant coach. Tight End Todd Heap missed two passes in the Baltimore Raven's game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, and Oakland Defensive End Junior Ioane didn't play in his team's game against the New England Patriots. Green Bay Offensive Assistant Darrell Bevell saw his team lose to St. Louis last Sunday.

In basketball, the five Mormon players seemed to be on the bench more than in past weeks, with Dallas' Shawn Bradley playing just one minute of one game last week, joining the Knicks' Travis Knight and Milwaukee's Mark Pope on the bench during the week. The Laker's Mark Madsen was a bit off his game, but got nearly 30 minutes of playing time in two of his team's games, but scored just 14 points overall. Sacramento's Scott Pollard was the standout, playing about a third of the time in the King's four games, and scoring 8 points per game -- a strong 25 points per 60 minutes on the court.

Active NHL Hockey players Aaron Gavey and Bill Lindsay both played three games without even making a shot on goal, but the Nashville Predator's coach Brent Peterson saw his team perform better -- committing just 14 penalties over 4 games and giving up 5 goals during the same period. Unfortunately, the Predator's offense didn't give enough support, and the team went 2-2.

Professional golf's PGA tour has also started its new season, but its still not clear which Mormon players are on the tour. Two have played in the two tournaments to date, and Jay Don Blake is in the best position after reaching third place in the Sony Open in Hawaii on January 13th. That tournament leaves him ranked 11th on the tour money list with $281,000 in earnings -- a very nice start for the season.

CFL

The CFL season will begin in June 20th. We have identified just two Mormon players, but suspect several others may be Mormon.

Wide receiver Ben Cahoon of the Montreal Alouettes is LDS, and Winnipeg Blue Bombers Linebacker Sefa O'Reilly is LDS.

While we are compiling a list of Mormon players in the CFL, that league doesn't make available player by player statistics.

We have also identified the following possible Mormon players, based on the 2001 Rosters:

  • Rob Hitchcock, Hamilton Tiger-Cats -- Weber State
  • Trevor Shaw, Hamilton Tiger-Cats -- Weber State
  • Kevin Alexander, Montreal Alouettes -- Utah State
  • Anthony Calvillo, Montreal Alouettes -- Utah State
  • Josh Cochran, Montreal Alouettes -- Utah
  • Neal Fort, Montreal Alouettes -- BYU
  • Chad Folk, Toronto Argonauts -- Utah

NCAA - Division I

We hoped to begin limited coverage of NCAA Division I football players and coaches who are Mormon, but were unable to start doing so this season. We still hope to do so next season. Here is a list of the players OUTSIDE OF UTAH we have identified to date. We would like also to include players INSIDE UTAH, including those at BYU, which often has non-Mormon players. Many of those listed come from H.B. Arnett's "Cougar Sportsline," with the assistance of Mormon News subscriber Brent Romney.
